Two climbers tragically died after falling from New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki, also known as Mount Cook. The accident occurred during an attempt to climb the 3,724-meter summit, which is famous for its tough and dangerous terrain.
The group consisted of four climbers. While two of them were rescued safely by helicopter early Tuesday morning after contacting emergency services the previous night, the other two climbers were found dead later the same day. Their bodies were discovered still connected by their climbing harnesses, highlighting the severity of the fall.
Rescuers are currently working to recover the bodies, but the operation is difficult due to the harsh alpine environment on Mount Cook. The mountain’s terrain includes large crevasses and rapidly changing weather conditions, making it a challenging and risky climb even for experienced mountaineers.
The identities of the climbers have not been officially released. However, reports from New Zealand media suggest that one of the deceased was a well-known mountain guide with an international reputation.
Mount Cook, located in the Southern Alps on New Zealand’s South Island, is known for its danger. Many climbers attempt to reach its summit each year, but fatalities are common. Nearly every climbing season sees at least one death, according to the New Zealand alpine club ClimbNZ.
Last year, three climbers from the United States and Canada went missing on Mount Cook. Despite a lengthy search, their bodies were never found, and they were eventually declared dead. The search efforts were hampered by severe weather, a common challenge in the area.
This latest tragedy serves as a reminder of the extreme risks involved in climbing Mount Cook, a peak that continues to test even the most skilled and prepared adventurers.
