Canada has lost one of its treasures with the passing of Burdett Sisler, who at 110 years old, was recognized as the nation’s oldest known individual and a surviving veteran of the Second World War. He quietly departed this life on April 2, just a short time before he would have celebrated his 111th birthday.
Born in 1915 in Akron, Sisler moved to Toronto at the tender age of three, following his father's job opportunity at an expanding tire manufacturing company. He dedicated much of his life to Canada, ultimately becoming a proud citizen.
Sisler's military journey began with the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he was unfortunately turned away due to poor eyesight. However, he found his calling in the army, serving as a telecommunications mechanic. His vital work supported advanced radar systems crucial for identifying and countering aerial threats during the war.
Post-war, Sisler fostered a fulfilling family life, marrying Mae and settling in Fort Erie, where they raised a large family encompassing children, grandchildren, and even more generations.
In his professional life, he initially operated a small radio and TV repair business before joining the federal customs service. For three decades at the Peace Bridge border crossing (1949-1979), he exemplified public service, which remained a hallmark of his character long after retirement.
Family members fondly remember Sisler as a kind, cheerful soul with a knack for humor, always encouraging positivity. His son shared that he had a strong belief in the importance of helping others and finding joy in life’s simplest moments. Even in his later years, Sisler adapted to modern technology, engaging with friends worldwide through email and social media.
His disciplined lifestyle, marked by abstinence from smoking and alcohol, contributed to his good health. It wasn’t until his 90s that he required minimal medication, a testament to his robust constitution.
Despite the loss of his beloved wife in 1985, Sisler remained socially active—traveling, engaging in community events, participating in a barbershop choir, and even volunteering to teach English to newcomers.
In his last years, while mobility became an issue, his mental acuity remained intact. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, his family rallied to ensure his well-being, and he made a swift recovery from the virus.
In 2022, Sisler transitioned to an assisted-living facility where he was surrounded by support from family and caregivers during his final days.
He has received heartfelt tributes for his service during the war and the richness of his long life. Jill McKnight noted that he was emblematic of a generation whose determination and sacrifices have shaped Canada.
Burdett Sisler’s life is a narrative woven with over a century of history, resilience, and evolution. His commitment to kindness and unyielding curiosity ensured his connection with those around him, establishing a timeless legacy for future generations.
