Several passengers were injured after a major train collision occurred between Pezinok and Bratislava in Slovakia on Sunday, causing widespread disruption to rail traffic. Authorities confirmed that the incident involved two passenger trains, with the precise cause still under investigation.
The accident took place shortly after train REX 1814, traveling from Nitra to Bratislava, departed Pezinok station and collided head-on with train Ex 620. The impact caused multiple carriages to derail, leaving nearly 30 passengers injured, some requiring urgent hospital care. Officials have not reported any fatalities at this time.
Rail services on the route have been suspended, and the state-run carrier ZSSK warned of significant delays and possible closures while engineers and emergency teams assess the damage. “Emergency services are responding at the scene of the accident, and several injuries have been reported,” ZSSK said, emphasizing that passenger and staff safety remains the top priority.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok is traveling to the site to oversee rescue and investigation operations. ZSSK has launched a full inquiry in coordination with national railway and transport authorities to determine the circumstances behind the collision.
Authorities are urging passengers to avoid the affected section and seek alternate transport options. Updates on train services and investigation findings are expected as emergency response teams work to restore infrastructure and ensure safety.
This collision underscores ongoing concerns about rail safety in Slovakia, prompting immediate action from both transport and emergency officials.
