The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that goalie Joseph Woll will rejoin the team after a month-long personal leave to address a family matter. His return brings much-needed relief to the struggling team, which has faced multiple injuries and a slow start to the season.

Captain Auston Matthews expressed his excitement after the team’s 5-3 loss at Buffalo. “It means a lot,” Matthews said. “Obviously, he’s a big part of our team, so very happy to hear that.” Woll’s return is expected to bolster the morale of both players and fans.

The 27-year-old Woll, drafted by Toronto in 2016 from Boston College, is entering his fifth NHL season. Last season, he achieved career highs with 27 wins in 42 appearances, making him an important asset to the Maple Leafs’ goaltending lineup.

Before his leave, Woll was expected to share duties with co-starter Anthony Stolarz. With Woll away, Stolarz carried most of the load, posting a 2-4-1 record and allowing four or more goals in four games. Backup Cayden Primeau, acquired off waivers, won his only start in a 7-4 victory over Nashville.

While Woll has rejoined the team, it is unclear when he will be ready to play due to time missed. Under league rules for long-term IR, Woll is eligible to resume play on Nov. 1, providing Toronto with some flexibility in the short term.

The Maple Leafs are dealing with multiple injuries. Against Buffalo, they were missing top defensemen Chris Tanev and Morgan Rielly, and leading scorer William Nylander left the ice late in the game. Coach Craig Berube did not provide an update on Nylander’s status for the next game against the Sabres.

Berube called Woll’s return “awesome” and highlighted how much Stolarz has carried the team during Woll’s absence. “It’s a lot for him that we leaned on him heavy here. A lot of games, a lot of hockey he’s played. So I’m sure he’s tired a little bit,” Berube said.

Woll’s return is expected to provide a boost to the team’s energy and confidence. With injuries affecting key players, having Woll back in goal could be a turning point for Toronto as they aim to improve their 3-4-1 record and regain momentum in the season.
