Director Alejandro González Iñárritu, who worked with Tom Cruise on an untitled film set for release next October, introduced the actor at a recent Academy gala. Iñárritu praised Cruise’s artistry, saying, "It is not how far he runs or how high he jumps. It's how precisely he decides to move, those tiny calibrations."
Cruise, 63, a four-time Oscar nominee who has never won, received an Honorary Oscar for his contributions to cinema, from Risky Business to the Top Gun films and the Mission: Impossible franchise. The award also recognized his dedication to championing the movie industry in an era of streaming and social media competition.
In his acceptance speech, Cruise reflected on how films shaped his childhood. "Suddenly the world was so much larger than the one that I knew," he said. He described working every job he could to afford movie tickets and emphasized his lifelong commitment to the art of cinema: "I will always do everything I can to support this art form and to champion new voices, to protect what makes cinema powerful, hopefully without too many more broken bones." He joked about breaking his ankle while filming a stunt in 2017.
"Making films is not what I do. It's who I am," Cruise added.
The gala also honored Dolly Parton with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her charitable work, including founding a library that has provided over 300 million books to children. Parton accepted her award via video.
Other honorees included actor and choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas.
