Prabhas’ much-awaited film The Raja Saab is facing a tough time at the box office. After opening to big numbers, the film has witnessed a sharp and worrying decline in collections, especially on its first Monday. The latest figures suggest that the film is now in a difficult position and a full recovery looks increasingly unlikely.
A Troubling Monday Test
The most important test for any big film is its first Monday, and The Raja Saab has failed to clear that hurdle. On Day 4, the film managed to collect only ₹6.60 crore net in India, which is a massive 65% drop compared to Sunday. This steep fall comes after the film had already seen a 51% drop on Saturday and a further 26% drop on Sunday.
In simple terms, the film earned nearly 88% less on Day 4 compared to its opening day, which is a worrying sign for any large-scale production, especially one mounted on such a huge budget.
Day-Wise Performance So Far
Despite being termed Prabhas’ weakest opening among his post-pandemic releases, The Raja Saab still managed to post an impressive ₹100 crore worldwide gross on its opening day, Friday, thanks to strong advance bookings and the star’s loyal fan base.
However, the excitement did not sustain over the weekend:
Friday (Day 1): Strong opening, ₹100 crore worldwide gross
Saturday: Big drop of around 51%
Sunday: Another dip of 26%
Monday (Day 4): Just ₹6.60 crore net in India
Breaking down Monday’s Indian collections further shows how badly the film is struggling in some markets:
Hindi version: ₹1.75 crore
Tamil version: Only around ₹7 lakh
By the end of Monday, The Raja Saab had collected ₹114.60 crore net in India (around ₹137 crore gross).
Overseas Performance Offers Little Relief
Overseas, the film got a decent start, mainly due to a strong opening day in the United States. So far, the Maruthi-directed film has earned over $3.5 million overseas. Taking both India and overseas markets together, the film’s global collection stands at around ₹170 crore gross.
While these numbers may look respectable at first glance, the sharp daily drops and weak weekday performance have raised serious concerns about the film’s long-term box office prospects.
Comparison With Prabhas’ Earlier Films
What makes the situation more alarming is how The Raja Saab is performing when compared to Prabhas’ earlier big releases like Saaho and Adipurush. Both those films were heavily criticised but still managed to collect over ₹15 crore net in India on their fourth day, despite suffering big drops.
In contrast, The Raja Saab could not even reach half of that figure on Day 4. This clearly shows that the audience rejection is much stronger and more immediate this time.
A Huge Budget, A Bigger Challenge
According to industry reports, The Raja Saab has been made on a massive budget of around ₹350 crore. With the current trend, trade experts believe it will be extremely difficult for the film to even come close to breaking even, let alone become profitable.
For a film of this scale, strong weekday collections are crucial to maintain momentum, but The Raja Saab seems to be losing screens and shows rapidly due to poor footfalls.
Why Expectations Were High
The film had generated a lot of curiosity even before its release. Directed by Maruthi, The Raja Saab was promoted as Prabhas’ return to a family entertainer after more than a decade. Since the Baahubali series, all of Prabhas’ films have been large-scale action spectacles. Fans were excited to see him in what was described as a more light-hearted, “vintage Prabhas” kind of role.
The film also boasts a strong supporting cast including Sanjay Dutt, Malavika Mohanan, Nidhhi Agerwal, Riddhi Kumar, Boman Irani, and Zarina Wahab, which further added to the pre-release buzz.
Negative Reviews Hurt the Film Badly
Unfortunately, once the film hit theatres, the response from critics and audiences was largely negative. Many reviews pointed out issues with the script, pacing, and overall execution. Word of mouth turned unfavourable very quickly, and that seems to be the biggest reason behind the sharp drops in collections from the very first weekend.
In today’s time, when audiences have plenty of options and ticket prices are high, poor word of mouth can finish a film’s theatrical run within days — and The Raja Saab appears to be a clear example of that.
The Road Ahead Looks Difficult
Looking at the current trend, the coming days do not look promising for the film. Unless there is some unexpected turnaround or strong support from smaller centres, The Raja Saab is likely to continue its downward slide at the box office.
With new releases around the corner and theatres quickly replacing underperforming films, the available screen count for The Raja Saab may reduce further, making recovery even harder.
Final Verdict So Far
The Raja Saab started its journey with a big opening driven by Prabhas’ star power, but the film has failed to hold the audience’s interest. A steep Monday drop, weak word of mouth, and poor weekday numbers have put the film in a very difficult position.
Given its massive budget and current performance, the film now seems headed towards being one of the more disappointing box office outings in Prabhas’ career, at least in terms of theatrical returns.
