A single-seat Tejas Light Combat Aircraft crashed during a flying demonstration at the Dubai Air Show, shocking thousands of people who had gathered to watch the event. The incident happened around 2:10 pm local time at Al Maktoum International Airport.
According to videos recorded by attendees, the Tejas fighter jet was performing a negative G turn, a high-risk aerobatic move, before it suddenly lost altitude. The aircraft then attempted a roll manoeuvre but was flying too low. By the time it levelled its wings, the jet was descending too fast and struck the ground, bursting into a massive fireball and sending thick black smoke into the air.
Eyewitnesses said the jet kept going lower during the manoeuvre. Many in the crowd initially believed the pilot would pull the aircraft back up, but it crashed within seconds. Videos and images from the scene show the jet engulfed in flames and later reduced to charred, twisted debris on the runway.
The pilot, Wing Commander Namansh Syal, lost his life in the accident. He was 34 years old and originally from a village in Himachal Pradesh. He is survived by his wife, who also serves in the Indian Air Force, their six-year-old daughter, and his parents. Syal was an experienced pilot who had studied at a well-known military school in Himachal Pradesh. His father had served in the Army before working in the education sector.
A negative G manoeuvre occurs when the forces acting on an aircraft push in the opposite direction of normal gravity. It can happen during aerobatic turns, rapid descents, or turbulence. If not handled properly, negative G forces can cause disorientation or even temporary blackouts. Pilots receive special training to manage these conditions safely.
The crash has left aviation enthusiasts, attendees, and officials deeply shocked. The Dubai Air Show, known for spectacular flying displays, witnessed one of its most tragic moments as the Tejas aircraft went down during what was expected to be a routine demonstration.
