In a shocking incident that has reignited global debates around AI surveillance and safety, a teenager in Baltimore County, Maryland, was detained by police after an AI-powered security system mistakenly identified his bag of Doritos as a firearm. The student, identified as Taki Allen, was eating chips with his friends outside Kenwood High School when the AI alert triggered chaos — and moments later, police arrived with guns drawn.
The AI system, developed by tech company Omnilert, detected what it believed to be a weapon in Allen’s hand and sent an emergency alert to both school and police officials. Within minutes, officers arrived at the scene, ordering the startled student to get on the ground. “At first, I didn’t know what was happening until they started walking toward me with guns, shouting, ‘Get on the ground,’” Allen said. “I was shocked. I was just holding a Doritos bag.”
According to police reports, Allen was handcuffed and searched, but no weapon was found. Later, after reviewing the surveillance footage, authorities realized the so-called “weapon” was nothing more than a crumpled orange chip bag. “The AI system mistook the bag for a firearm due to the way it was being held,” one officer explained.
The AI false alert has sparked serious concerns about the reliability of artificial intelligence in public safety systems. Parents and students expressed outrage, questioning how such a massive error could happen. “This could have gone horribly wrong,” said one parent outside the school. “You can’t have police pulling guns on kids because of a computer mistake.”
In response, the Kenwood High School administration issued a public apology to Allen and the students who witnessed the distressing event. “We understand how upsetting this was for the individual and other students involved,” the school said in a statement. “Our counselors are available to support anyone affected by the incident.”
Omnilert, the company behind the AI detection system, also released a statement expressing regret over the situation. “We deeply regret this incident and wish to convey our concern to the student and the wider community affected,” the company said. They added that an internal review of the AI system’s visual recognition process is now underway to prevent future mistakes.
The incident has reignited the AI ethics and security debate, with experts warning that overreliance on artificial intelligence in schools and public spaces could lead to dangerous outcomes. Critics argue that AI, despite its potential, still lacks the emotional intelligence and accuracy required for real-world policing.
For Taki Allen, the experience remains deeply unsettling. “I was just eating chips with my friends,” he said. “I never imagined something like this could happen.” His story has since gone viral, serving as a stark reminder of how AI errors can have life-altering consequences — and why human oversight remains essential in a world increasingly run by machines.
