In a notable development, three sizeable tankers, which include two oil supertankers and one LNG carrier, have opted for an alternative route along the coast of Oman to navigate into the Strait of Hormuz. This move indicates a significant change in maritime navigation in light of the ongoing regional conflicts.
These vessels, all under the management of Oman Ship Management Company, have been monitored moving eastward while identifying themselves as Omani-owned. Unlike the frequently used northern passage close to Iranian waters, their new route closely follows Oman’s southern coast.
This shift comes as the Strait of Hormuz faces stringent restrictions due to prolonged geopolitical tensions. Iran has permitted limited passage through its waters under strict supervision and is reportedly considering imposing charges that could reach up to $2 million per voyage.
The alternative route taken by these tankers avoids the narrower northern passage and is situated south of the designated international shipping lanes, particularly advantageous for large vessels needing deeper waters and broader navigational space.
Each oil tanker is estimated to carry around 2 million barrels of crude oil, while the LNG carrier appears to be empty according to tracking data. The vessels ceased broadcasting position signals near Mussandam Peninsula, raising questions about whether they completed their full journey.
This route change underlines growing difficulties in maritime tracking, as signal jamming and spoofing incidents have emerged in the region. Such issues complicate the reliable monitoring of vessel movements.
The continuing situation poses implications for global energy markets, given that the Strait of Hormuz is a crucial oil transit chokepoint. Any changes in traffic patterns or disruptions directly affect global oil supply chains and pricing strategies.
