SpaceX launched its first-ever human spaceflight directly over the Earth's polar regions on Monday. This mission, called "Fram2," is a private space mission that will last several days and has four astronauts aboard. The mission is named after the famous Norwegian ship, Fram, which was built in the 1800s for Arctic and Antarctic explorations.
The Fram2 mission will carry out different experiments, including the first-ever X-ray taken in space and growing mushrooms in microgravity. Scientists believe this research could help with future space trips, like traveling to Mars.

The crew launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:46 pm on Monday (0146 GMT Tuesday). They flew aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, which was launched by a Falcon 9 rocket. The launch was thrilling, and the control room cheered as the rocket soared into the sky, lighting up the night with a bright, orange flame.
Before the launch, the mission commander, Chun Wang, who is from China and now lives in Malta, said, "With the same pioneering spirit as early polar explorers, we aim to bring back new data and knowledge to help space exploration." Wang, who co-founded two crypto companies called f2pool and skatefish, chose the rest of the team. The team members are:
Jannicke Mikkelsen, a Norwegian film director, who is the vehicle commander.
Rabea Rogge, a robotics researcher from Germany, who is the mission pilot.
Eric Philips, an Australian polar explorer, who is the mission specialist and medical officer.
The crew trained for about eight months to prepare for the four-day trip. They even went on a wilderness expedition in Alaska to learn how to live together in tough conditions.
After they return to Earth, the crew will try to leave the spacecraft without extra medical help. This will help researchers learn how astronauts can do basic tasks after being in space.
Before this mission, astronauts had never flown directly over Earth's polar regions, even on the Apollo missions. They didn’t fly over the poles even when they went to the Moon. The International Space Station (ISS) also doesn’t fly over the poles.
SpaceX has completed five private astronaut missions so far. Three of them were in partnership with Axiom Space and went to the ISS. The other two were free-flying missions around Earth.
The first private astronaut mission was called Inspiration4, which took place in 2021. The second was called Polaris Dawn, and it featured the first spacewalk by private astronauts. Both of these missions were funded by Jared Isaacman, a billionaire who made his fortune from e-payments. Isaacman is close to SpaceX’s CEO, Elon Musk, and has been nominated to be the next NASA administrator by former President Donald Trump.
This mission, Fram2, marks another big step in space exploration, as private companies continue to push the boundaries of what humans can do in space.
