Sacramento, USA:
Cori Close, head coach of UCLA Bruins women's basketball, has opened up about the growing challenges in modern college basketball, admitting that the evolving demands of coaching have left her questioning how long she can continue in the role.
Speaking ahead of UCLA’s Sacramento Region 2 semifinal clash against Minnesota Golden Gophers women's basketball, Close revealed that the past two years have been the most exhausting of her 33-year career. “I’ve never been as tired as I’ve been in the last two years,” Close said, highlighting the emotional and professional strain brought on by recent structural changes in the sport.
Changing Landscape of College Basketball
Close emphasized that coaching today extends far beyond traditional responsibilities like recruiting and game preparation. The introduction of the transfer portal, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies, and revenue sharing models has significantly reshaped the profession.
Coaches are now required not only to recruit talent but also to:
Retain players year-to-year
Navigate financial structures for athletes
Maintain team stability amid constant transfers
The NCAA’s recent decision to shift the transfer portal window—opening it immediately after the national championship instead of during the tournament—has added another layer of complexity.
Call for Structural Support
Close urged governing bodies, including the NCAA, to introduce better systems and boundaries to ensure sustainability in the sport. “We need infrastructure that allows sustained excellence and a sustainable pace,” she said, warning that without reforms, the sport risks losing experienced and high-quality coaches.
Success Amid Uncertainty
Despite these concerns, UCLA continues to thrive on the court. The Bruins are enjoying one of the most successful periods in program history:
Reached the Final Four last season for the first time since 1978
Won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles this year
Lost just one game this season
Different Perspectives in Coaching
While Close voiced concerns, Kara Lawson, head coach of Duke Blue Devils women's basketball, took a more neutral stance. Having entered coaching during this period of change, Lawson noted that constant evolution has been her only experience. “Change has been what’s been standard for me,” Lawson said, distancing herself from broader debates about the sport’s direction.
Growing Trend of Coaching Fatigue
Close’s remarks come amid a broader trend, with several veteran coaches stepping down or considering retirement due to health concerns and increasing job pressures.
