Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, Jammu & Kashmir, witnessed a massive avalanche on Tuesday night, covering houses and vehicles in the Sarbal area. Officials confirmed that, despite the scale of the incident, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
The avalanche struck around 10:12 pm, sending a large amount of snow rushing down the mountains toward nearby homes and hotels. CCTV footage captured the moment when the snowstorm engulfed the buildings in its path.
Authorities reiterated that there were no reports of any loss of life. The region had been under a high-intensity avalanche warning issued on Monday due to continuous snowfall across the valley.
Fresh snowfall across Kashmir on Tuesday also forced the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and led to the cancellation of all flights at Srinagar airport, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded.
National Highway 44 was closed as snow accumulated near the Navyug tunnel at Qazigund and Banihal, making the road unsafe for travel. At Srinagar International Airport, all 58 scheduled flights – 29 arrivals and 29 departures – were cancelled due to continuous snowfall that made runway operations unsafe.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have urged residents and tourists to stay alert in avalanche-prone areas.
