A powerful winter storm sweeping across the northeastern United States has brought air travel in New York City to a near standstill, stranding thousands of holiday travellers and forcing airlines to cancel hundreds of flights at the region’s busiest airports.
According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, more than 400 flights were cancelled by Friday morning across John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport, with dozens more delayed as airlines began grounding services overnight.
Carriers moved swiftly after forecasters warned of heavy snowfall, poor visibility and rising winds expected to intensify through Saturday, creating hazardous conditions for both aircraft and ground operations.
Snow expected to intensify through Saturday
The National Weather Service has forecast snowfall of between four and eight inches across New York City, Long Island and surrounding areas. The heaviest accumulation is expected from Friday afternoon through late Saturday morning, with sub-freezing temperatures increasing the risk of icy roads and reduced visibility.
City officials cautioned residents and travellers to prepare for rapidly worsening conditions. New York City Emergency Management urged people to limit non-essential travel, warning that light flurries could quickly develop into heavier snow by evening.
City activates emergency response
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that all city agencies are operating under the Winter Weather Emergency Plan, with crews placed on standby across the five boroughs.
“As New Yorkers continue to travel for the holidays and prepare for the New Year, they must also be ready for hazardous conditions from Friday into Saturday,” Adams said. He advised residents to avoid driving where possible, allow extra time for public transport and closely monitor official updates.
Sanitation teams began pretreating roads early Friday, deploying salt spreaders and positioning snow ploughs ahead of the storm. Officials warned that waste collection and other services could face delays as crews prioritise keeping major routes clear.
Dangerous conditions for travellers
Emergency staff have been placed on round-the-clock duty to assist with road clearing and coordination. Property owners have also been reminded of their responsibility to clear sidewalks promptly to ensure pedestrian safety, with fines possible for non-compliance.
Snow is expected to ease by midday Saturday, but authorities warned that icy patches could persist into Sunday. A stronger cold front later in the week may bring freezing rain to parts of western Pennsylvania, while blustery conditions are forecast for cities including Washington and Philadelphia.
Ripple effects across the region
Winter weather advisories remain in effect for parts of southern Connecticut, northeastern New Jersey and the wider mid-Atlantic region. As the storm tracks eastward, forecasters say it could shift into freezing rain before moving offshore.
With the holiday period marking one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, airlines have cautioned passengers that disruptions may continue even after snowfall ends, as crews work to de-ice aircraft and clear runways.
For now, travellers hoping to fly out of New York face ongoing delays and cancellations, with officials urging patience and safety until conditions improve and normal operations resume.
