Indian cricket star Shafali Verma has opened up about her struggles and triumphs following India’s historic World Cup victory. The 21-year-old batter and all-rounder from Rohtak said that consistent hard work and focus helped her overcome a difficult year and play a key role in the final match against South Africa.
Shafali was picked as a replacement for injured Pratika Rawal, but she made the most of her opportunity. In the World Cup final, she scored 87 runs and took 2 wickets for 36 runs, earning the Player of the Final award. Her performance was crucial in India’s 52-run victory over South Africa.
Speaking at a felicitation event in her hometown Rohtak, Shafali shared how she battled challenges in the past year. “The last year was tough for me. I faced many struggles, but I kept working hard and was rewarded by God for my effort,” she said. Her journey from setbacks to success has inspired many young athletes across the country.
Shafali was added to the Indian squad just before the semi-final against Australia. Although she did not make a big impact in that game, her determination to contribute to the team’s success remained strong. “When I joined the team ahead of the semi-final, I was determined to contribute to the World Cup win,” she said.
Reflecting on her mindset during the big match, Shafali said, “The final is always a big stage. Initially, I was a bit nervous, but I calmed myself, focused on my strategy, and executed it well.” Her calm approach helped India post a strong total and later take key wickets to secure the win.
After returning home, Shafali received a grand welcome from fans, local officials, and young cricketers. Many gathered to celebrate her achievements and take inspiration from her story. She took time to interact with aspiring players, motivating them to pursue their dreams with focus and dedication.
Speaking to a group of young girls, Shafali emphasized the importance of hard work and self-belief. “They should always work hard in whatever field they choose and have self-belief; the results will follow,” she advised. Her words resonated with many, especially in her hometown, where she is seen as a role model for young athletes.
India’s women’s team made history by winning their first-ever global cricket title. The journey was not easy — they suffered three straight losses in the league stage before making a strong comeback in the knockout rounds. Their determination and teamwork helped them lift the trophy, and Shafali’s performance was a key part of that success.
Shafali has often spoken about her admiration for Sachin Tendulkar, calling him her biggest inspiration. She also credited her family for their unwavering support. “My family has always stood by me through every challenge,” she said, adding that their encouragement kept her motivated even during tough times.
Describing her approach during the final, Shafali said she tried to remain composed. “I tried to stay calm and execute my plans, and things went as expected. The only thought was that we had to give our all in those seven hours for our country,” she recalled. Her balanced mindset played a vital role in her all-round success.
When asked about falling short of a century in the final, Shafali replied that winning the World Cup mattered more than personal milestones. “I have no regrets about missing a hundred. The happiness of lifting the World Cup for India is beyond words,” she said with a smile.
Shafali Verma’s journey — from a struggling player to the hero of the final — is a powerful story of resilience and belief. Her comeback not only marked a personal victory but also inspired millions of young women to chase their dreams with passion. As India celebrates its World Cup triumph, Shafali’s story stands as a shining example of grit, focus, and perseverance in the world of sports.
