Pakistan’s aviation landscape faces a sudden jolt as the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has suspended Serene Air’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC), grounding all domestic and international flights immediately. The airline, a significant player in private aviation and the first Chinese-invested carrier in Pakistan, now finds itself unable to operate any services.
Why Flights Are Stopped
According to the official PCAA notification, Serene Air has failed to maintain the minimum fleet required to conduct safe operations. “Serene Air presently has zero serviceable aircraft available for operations, rendering it incapable of sustaining the operational capacity required to conduct safe air operations,” the notice stated. As a result, the airline was ordered to surrender its AOC without delay.

Passengers have been left in uncertainty, particularly those relying on the airline for domestic connections and international travel. Some travellers were stranded abroad, including in Saudi Arabia, as one of the airline’s planes was grounded following a bird strike. The airline sought special permission from the PCAA to repatriate affected passengers.
Airline Response
In a public statement, Serene Air described the suspension as a temporary pause caused by “unforeseen circumstances.” The airline emphasized that its team is actively working with regulators to restore operations swiftly, assuring passengers that safety and service remain top priorities.
Regulatory Background
The PCAA has highlighted that repeated warnings were issued to Serene Air to maintain operational aircraft, but the airline failed to comply. This suspension echoes challenges previously faced in Pakistan’s aviation sector, including the collapse of Shaheen Air International in 2018 due to financial instability and unpaid dues, which left passengers and employees stranded.
What This Means for Pakistan’s Aviation
Currently, the domestic market is limited to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Airblue, and Fly Jinnah, all of which continue to operate major domestic routes and select international destinations. Experts suggest that such disruptions underline the need for stricter regulatory compliance and fleet management to maintain passenger trust and sector stability.
Potential Reinstatement
The PCAA has indicated that Serene Air may regain its AOC if it restores its aircraft to operational status and formally requests license revival. Until then, passengers will have to seek alternative carriers for travel within Pakistan and abroad.
