Scott Robertson has officially parted ways with the New Zealand All Blacks, ending his coaching tenure through a mutual agreement with New Zealand Rugby post a detailed performance review. This marks an abrupt conclusion to his role, just two years in, despite having a contract extending until the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Speculations surrounding Robertson's future intensified since December, amid rising tensions within the team and between key players and coaching staff. While New Zealand Rugby refrained from divulging specifics, they confirmed that match outcomes and internal dynamics were crucial to the review.

Taking over after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Robertson came in with a prestigious background, significantly shaping the Canterbury Crusaders into a powerhouse with multiple Super Rugby championships on his resume, leading many to believe he would replicate similar achievements internationally.

During the 2025 season, the All Blacks managed to secure 10 wins out of 13 matches under his leadership. However, notable defeats raised alarms among fans and officials alike.

The most shocking moment came when New Zealand faced its inaugural away loss to Argentina, a historic blow for supporters. This followed a disheartening 43–10 defeat against South Africa in Wellington, a record low for home losses in All Blacks history, amplifying scrutiny on the coaching staff.

The All Blacks also suffered a heavy defeat against England at Twickenham, thwarting their ambitions for a Grand Slam tour across the Home Nations, a traditional measure of success for Kiwi teams in Europe.

New Zealand Rugby indicated that the timing of this review was purposeful, with the halfway mark of the World Cup cycle deemed ideal to assess progress and make pivotal decisions for the future. Given the demanding international schedule leading up to the 2027 World Cup, they emphasized the need for clarity in their direction moving forward.

The review explored various aspects such as game performance, player development, team environment, and preparation for upcoming challenges. After thorough talks, both parties agreed that a shift in leadership would benefit the team.

Robertson expressed his disappointment about leaving prematurely but acknowledged the review's feedback, reiterating that coaching the All Blacks was his career's highest honor. He reflected on the advancements made during his tenure, highlighting the rise of emerging talents and strong team unity.

He concluded that stepping down would facilitate the team's progression with a fresh perspective. Following this agreement, a new coaching group will have ample time to gear up for the next Rugby World Cup.

The search for Robertson's successor will commence promptly, as the All Blacks are scheduled to commence their Nations Championship matches in July, alongside a rigorous international calendar in 2026.

Former Japan head coach Jamie Joseph has emerged as a prime candidate to take over, known for cultivating Japan into a formidable test side and bringing prior experience from the All Blacks setup.

Robertson's exit signifies a pivotal moment for New Zealand rugby. Despite maintaining a commendable win rate, the combination of heavy losses and internal disputes ultimately prompted a strategic shift. The focus now shifts to appointing a coach capable of rebounding consistency and unity, steering the All Blacks back toward their expected status as one of the leading teams in global sports.
