The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has successfully achieved a seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the upcoming 2026–2027 term. This significant election took place in London, where Saudi Arabia garnered 142 votes from various member states, underscoring its pivotal role in the evolution of the global maritime landscape. The IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, is tasked with setting international benchmarks for maritime safety, mitigating ship pollution, and safeguarding the marine ecosystem.

Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Transport General Authority (TGA), extended heartfelt gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince for their unwavering support for the Kingdom’s transport sector. He noted that this election signifies the international community's trust in the country's capabilities and its rising prominence in global maritime matters.

The TGA emphasized that this success is a product of robust backing from the Kingdom’s leadership to advance the maritime transport sector. It also epitomizes ongoing progress under the Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to bolster Saudi Arabia’s stance as a pivotal player in international transport and logistics. Notable accomplishments in maritime include the establishment of modern ports, a leading regional fleet, and enhanced shipping operations to boost global competitiveness.

Saudi Arabia’s ports are strategically positioned along critical trade routes, notably the Red Sea, through which approximately 13% of global trade is conducted. The National Transport and Logistics Strategy aims to enhance port operations, streamline trade processes, and broaden marine tourism, including cruises and coastal transport. These strategies elevate the Kingdom’s strategic profile and affirm its role as a global maritime nexus.

Earning a place on the IMO Council further highlights Saudi Arabia’s influential presence in the realm of maritime regulation. The Kingdom continues to play a vital role in advancing maritime security, fostering safe and efficient shipping practices, and supporting worldwide initiatives for marine conservation. By joining the IMO Council, Saudi Arabia is poised to collaborate closely with member states to develop international maritime policies, promote sustainable practices, and share knowledge to enhance global maritime transport systems.

Additionally, the Kingdom’s council membership empowers it to influence discussions on maritime safety, environmental stewardship, and sustainable transport. This opportunity enables Saudi Arabia to partake in crucial decisions, initiatives, and partnerships that shape the future of the international maritime industry.

This achievement mirrors Saudi Arabia’s long-term ambition to emerge as a leading figure in global maritime affairs. It acknowledges the Kingdom’s ongoing investments in port modernization, fleet expansion, and logistics network improvement. The election also showcases the effectiveness of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to align with international standards, protect marine ecosystems, and ensure safe and dependable shipping operations.

Through this membership, Saudi Arabia reasserts its dedication to bolstering international maritime collaboration, aiding in regulatory development, and fostering joint projects that strengthen global maritime trade and security. The Kingdom’s proactive engagement in the IMO Council secures its position as a worldwide maritime authority and embodies its leadership vision for sustainable industry growth.
