Some life journeys are shaped quietly through resilience. Others are forged through hardship, faith, and the courage to rise again. Hemen Habtegiorgis’s story is one of endurance, transformation, and a deep commitment to creating a better future for mothers and children.
Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Hemen grew up witnessing the quiet strength of African mothers. In her neighborhood, survival often depended on sacrifice. Many mothers carried enormous responsibilities while raising their children alone. They fed their families while going hungry themselves, clothed their children while having little of their own, and spent sleepless nights baking injera to sell so their families could survive. Even when they lacked the opportunity to pursue education themselves, they ensured their children could attend school and graduate. Hemen considers herself the result of that sacrifice.
Years later, when life unexpectedly placed her in the position of becoming a single mother, she realized her journey carried a deeper purpose. She wanted to share her story because she knew many women like her needed the courage to stand independently and become a source of pride for their children.
Hemen was the second child in her family, with one older brother and two younger sisters. As a child she was quiet and deeply reflective. Many people described her as serious or distant. Because of that, even when she had done nothing wrong, she often found herself blamed and punished. Her relationship with her father was especially difficult. Discipline frequently came through physical punishment and emotional distance. Although he provided for the family, affection was rarely expressed. For a child, the absence of love leaves a lasting mark.
During those moments, Hemen found comfort in nature. Her family lived within the compound of Imperial Haile Selassie School in Addis Ababa, where her father worked preparing examination papers. The large compound filled with trees and open space became her sanctuary. When she felt hurt or alone, she would walk through the grass and speak quietly to the leaves and plants around her. When she needed to cry, she would lean against the wall of the nearby church, release her tears silently, and then return home composed. Those quiet moments taught her how to endure loneliness and face life’s hardships without breaking.
Life became even more difficult when her parents separated while she was still very young. Suddenly she carried responsibilities beyond her years. Supporting her mother and helping care for her younger sisters became part of her daily reality. One of the most challenging experiences came when she began working in Shiro Meda, a crowded marketplace filled with intense activity and mostly male workers. At first the environment was intimidating and overwhelming. Even simple tasks caused her hands to tremble. But she refused to give up. Her determination was strengthened by the kindness of her supervisor, Jared, who supported her during those difficult days.
During that time her greatest joy came from helping her family survive and seeing her mother smile despite the hardships they faced. She believes that throughout those years God carried burdens she could never have carried alone.
Despite the challenges she faced, Hemen never lost her love for education and creativity. She later returned to her studies and pursued training in theatrical arts and literature. Her passion for storytelling grew stronger as she realized that stories can reveal the deeper truths of human life. To Hemen, storytelling is not simply entertainment but a reflection of truth. She believes everyone has a story, but not every story carries meaning. Some lives pass quietly, while others contain experiences that reveal important lessons about resilience, faith, and human strength.
Her own experiences eventually inspired creative work including a poetry collection titled Desire and Truth. Many of her poems were written during her youth, reflecting the emotions, observations, and inner thoughts she carried during those years. For her, poetry is inseparable from feeling. She believes a poem cannot exist without emotion. Even a single line must come from a deeply sensitive heart.
Motherhood transformed Hemen’s understanding of life in profound ways. Through her child she began to rediscover herself. Watching her son grow helped her understand the true meaning of womanhood and the deeper responsibilities that come with being a parent. Her child became a source of joy, faith, and unconditional love. This experience also inspired her to explore questions about identity and womanhood. On social media she once asked a simple question about the value of womanhood and received thoughtful responses from many people. That moment reminded her that motherhood and womanhood are powerful yet distinct experiences, and it encouraged her to continue sharing her voice with others.
Drawing from her own life experiences as a mother, Hemen developed the concept for a family focused television program. The idea began with a personal concern. When her child began eating solid food, she searched for practical guidance on healthy meals for children. The information she found in books and videos often failed to address the real challenges mothers face. Determined to find solutions, she began experimenting with natural and affordable meal ideas and testing them herself.
This process eventually inspired a television project titled My Family, designed as a magazine style program focused on parenting, child nutrition, and family wellbeing. The program combined expert advice with short dramatizations inspired by real life experiences. Hemen worked with pediatricians, nutritionists, and child development specialists to ensure the program could genuinely support families. For her, the project represented the transformation of personal experience into meaningful service for society.
Her work continues to evolve with a clear purpose. Through her institution Heaven Special Needs Care and Daycare she hopes to create a supportive environment where children receive care, patience, and understanding while mothers gain peace of mind. She understands the challenges many parents face when raising children who require additional care or attention. Her goal is to create a place where children feel safe and loved while parents can work and support their families without constant worry.
Looking back on her life, Hemen believes the greatest lesson she has learned is to focus on what truly matters. She dedicates her time to raising her child, pursuing meaningful work, and building opportunities that support her family and community. Her journey has taught her that a mother must face life’s challenges with courage and wisdom. The strength of a mother shapes the path her children will follow.
Today, Hemen Habtegiorgis continues to move forward with determination, faith, and gratitude. She believes the light she was created to give must continue to shine. Through her work, her voice, and her dedication to children and families, that light continues to grow.
