Jerusalem:
Israel has claimed that Iran’s top security official Ali Larijani was killed in overnight airstrikes carried out on Iranian targets. However, Iran has not officially confirmed his death so far.
The claim was made by Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz, who said that Larijani died in the strike. Despite this, uncertainty remains as Iranian authorities have not issued any statement regarding his condition.
Larijani was one of the most powerful figures in Iran’s leadership. He served as the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and was a former nuclear negotiator. He was also considered a close ally of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
If confirmed, his death would make him one of the most senior Iranian officials killed in the ongoing conflict.
Reports suggest Larijani was last seen during Quds Day rallies in Tehran on Friday. On the same day, the United States announced a reward of up to $10 million for information on several senior Iranian military and intelligence officials, including Larijani.
Israeli media reports also stated that Gholamreza Soleimani, head of Iran’s Basij Resistance Force, was among those targeted in the strikes, along with other senior members. Iran has not confirmed any casualties from these attacks.
Meanwhile, Iran’s state media released a statement attributed to Larijani, criticising US President Donald Trump and rejecting claims that recent anti-US and anti-Israel protests in Iran were fabricated.
A day earlier, Larijani had also called on the Islamic world to support Iran, stating that the country remains firm in its stance against the United States and Israel despite ongoing attacks.
As of now, Iran’s silence continues, leaving the situation unclear despite Israel’s strong claims about Larijani’s death.
