The brutal reality of Sudan’s ongoing civil war is now visible from space. Newly released satellite images from Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) reveal mass killings, widespread destruction, and forced displacements as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) tighten their grip on El-Fasher — the last major stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region.
The images, taken days after the RSF captured El-Fasher on October 26, show evidence of bodies lying near RSF vehicles, signs of burned structures, and “reddish earth discoloration” consistent with mass graves. The HRL report suggests that the RSF conducted house-to-house clearance operations in the Daraja Oula neighborhood, where hundreds of civilians had taken refuge just a week earlier.
Sudan has been engulfed in a deadly civil war for over two years, with the conflict erupting in April 2023 after tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF — former allies — escalated over plans to integrate their forces during the transition to democracy.
According to the United Nations, the conflict has claimed more than 40,000 lives and displaced nearly 12 million people, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The HRL report, published Monday, paints a harrowing picture of events unfolding in El-Fasher. The satellite imagery reveals RSF vehicles positioned in tactical formations, suggesting systematic searches and killings across residential areas.
“Imagery analysis shows objects consistent with the size of human bodies on the ground near RSF vehicles,” the HRL stated. “Several sites display signs of recent soil disturbances, consistent with potential burial activity.”
The operations reportedly occurred close to Al Safiya Mosque, which the RSF previously attacked in a drone strike on September 19, killing around 78 people. The mosque’s surrounding neighborhood, once a refuge for displaced families, now shows signs of devastation.
Thousands of civilians are now fleeing south toward RSF-controlled camps or west toward Tawilah, desperate to escape the escalating violence.
“Large groups of people are visible moving along the B26 road toward the Zamzam IDP camp,” HRL noted. “This area, once a refuge for displaced persons, is now under complete RSF control and being used as a base of operations.”
Witness accounts, verified by humanitarian agencies, confirm reports of killings during escape attempts and looting of aid convoys.
The satellite evidence also confirms that the RSF has taken control of the Sixth Division headquarters of the Sudanese Armed Forces in El-Fasher. Significant structural damage and the presence of RSF vehicles at the site indicate a complete takeover.
The HRL’s findings suggest that the RSF’s dominance in Darfur is nearly total, leaving little to no resistance from government forces.
The conflict in Sudan has plunged the nation into chaos, hunger, and disease. Entire cities have been flattened, and humanitarian corridors remain blocked. Despite international calls for ceasefire and dialogue, violence continues to escalate.
As the bloodshed becomes visible even from space, the world faces mounting pressure to act. Yet, for millions of Sudanese civilians caught in the crossfire, hope for peace remains heartbreakingly distant.
