Residents of the San Francisco Bay Area were startled early Sunday morning as a series of small earthquakes struck the region, highlighting the area's ongoing seismic risks. Despite the tremors, authorities confirmed that no injuries or structural damage occurred.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), at least eight earthquakes occurred between 9:38 am and 9:41 am local time, centred southeast of San Ramon, approximately 25–30 miles east of San Francisco. The strongest tremor measured magnitude 3.8, while the others ranged from 2.5 to 3.7 on the Richter scale.
Residents in San Ramon, Dublin, and Emeryville reported feeling brief shaking and mild rattling, describing the motion as a “quick, rolling motion.” Emergency services confirmed that no injuries were reported and no property damage occurred.
Earthquakes above magnitude 2.5 are generally strong enough to be felt by people near the epicenter but rarely cause structural harm. The Bay Area lies along the Calaveras and Hayward fault lines, both known for frequent minor tremors. The recent swarm comes after a period of heightened seismic activity in September and October, when minor quakes rattled Berkeley and surrounding areas.
Experts say that while the tremors were minor, they serve as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness in this seismically active region. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and advise residents to stay informed and follow safety guidelines in case of stronger future quakes.
