Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have contradicted his post-Qatar World Cup remarks with his latest statement about the tournament. Ronaldo had a heartbreaking exit from the 2022 World Cup, where Portugal was knocked out by Morocco, while his long-time rival Lionel Messi led Argentina to the title. For many, that World Cup seemed to settle the Messi vs Ronaldo debate, with Messi decisively pulling ahead.
After Portugal’s exit in Qatar, Ronaldo posted on Instagram, stating:
"Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career. Fortunately, I won many international titles, but putting our country at the highest level in the world was my biggest dream."
However, in a recent interview with Piers Morgan on his YouTube channel, Ronaldo said:
"I'd say it's NOT a dream for me to win the World Cup."
He questioned whether a single tournament should define a player’s legacy:
"To define what? To define if I'm one of the best in history? To win one competition, six games, seven games, do you think it's fair?"
Ronaldo has participated in five World Cups, but the tournament remains an unfulfilled chapter in his illustrious career. Despite his club-level success, he has struggled to achieve the same dominance internationally, with Portugal still chasing their first World Cup title. The 2022 Qatar edition was especially disappointing — he was benched in key matches, including the crucial quarterfinal against Morocco, which ended in a 0-1 defeat and Portugal’s elimination. For Ronaldo, the tournament ended with unfulfilled expectations and the elusive trophy still out of reach.
