A recent preliminary report from Spain's rail accident investigation agency, CIAF, indicates that a rail fracture likely occurred prior to a devastating high-speed train crash in southern Spain earlier this week.
The unfortunate incident unfolded near Adamuz in Cordoba province on Sunday, involving two high-speed trains and leaving 45 people dead, marking one of Europe's deadliest rail accidents in recent memory.
According to preliminary findings, a high-speed train operated by Iryo derailed after traversing a compromised section of track. Shortly afterward, it collided with an oncoming high-speed train belonging to Spain's state railway company, Renfe. Both trains sustained extensive damage, and the incident has sparked widespread outrage across the nation.
The CIAF's early analysis suggests strong indicators that the rail failed before the Iryo train encountered it. This infers that the track's damage was the cause of the derailment rather than the result of the collision. However, investigators have emphasized that this remains an initial hypothesis, and the precise reason for the rail's fracture is yet to be determined.
Evidence collected shows substantial damage on the wheels of the Iryo train, where marks and notches were found on the right side's wheels, identical to those on the broken rail section. This implies that the wheels encountered the fractured rail top as the train advanced.
Similar wheel damage was located on other trains that previously passed through the problematic area before the incident, raising serious alarms regarding track safety and the potential oversight that may have led to the tragedy.
At this point, CIAF has not excluded any potential causes for the rail failure. Officials noted that further technical evaluations, material analyses, and an inspection of maintenance records will be conducted in the upcoming weeks. The investigation will require careful attention as experts delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Spain's Transport Ministry has remained silent on the findings so far, and Iryo's parent company, Ferrovie dello Stato, has also refrained from commenting on the preliminary report.
As families grieve for their lost ones, there are growing calls for accountability and enhanced safety protocols to avert future calamities. Authorities have assured a full and transparent inquiry to establish responsibility and bolster rail safety across the nation.
