Putin Proposes Direct Talks With Ukraine to End Ongoing War

Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked Ukraine to restart peace talks directly, without any set conditions. He said these talks can happen on Thursday, May 15 in Istanbul.

Putin shared this message on Sunday, calling for Ukraine to return to the talking table. He stressed that it was not Russia, but Kyiv, that walked away from peace talks in 2022.

"We did not leave the talks. It was Kyiv that stopped speaking to us. Still, we are ready to begin direct talks again, with no demands from our side," said Putin.

He reminded that during earlier meetings, both sides had come up with a draft agreement. The Ukrainian side had even signed it in the beginning. But later, under pressure from Western countries, it was thrown away and never used.

Putin said that Russia has many times asked for a ceasefire, but each time, Ukraine stayed silent or did not agree.

"Even now, after we announced a break in fighting, Kyiv tried five times to attack our border in just three days," he added.

Putin ended his message by asking Ukraine to meet face-to-face once more to find peace, saying “despite all that has happened, we are still open to talk.”
