HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently visited the new Nad Hessa power substation. This is a 132/11 kilovolt (kV) digital substation, built with new-age systems to help meet the rising need for power in Dubai. It also sets fresh goals in clean energy and smart planning.
This substation uses high-end tools for better control, safer data lines, and faster checking of its machines. These tools help keep Dubai's power system steady and strong. It is also part of DEWA’s bigger plan to use smart ideas in making, moving, and giving out electricity.
The substation cost more than AED 93.322 million. Building it took over 649,000 work hours, all done safely with no injuries. Thanks to smart building methods, the substation was finished five months earlier than planned.

Al Tayer said this substation plays a key role in helping Dubai reach its power and green targets. It also fits in with the UAE’s plan to bring zero carbon by 2050 and Dubai’s own plan to cut carbon pollution fully by that year. The substation has already won the Emirates Innovates Award for its smart design.
Al Tayer said, “This is more than just a power station. It’s a move to make Dubai a world leader in clean energy and smart cities. The substation cuts down 57% of carbon smoke, saving about 54.24 tonnes each year. Its smart setup will help us use energy better and keep the power system steady. It will serve homes, businesses, and tech firms with steady, green energy. This project shows our strong will for top quality and care for the Earth.”
Hussain Lootah, who leads the Power Delivery section at DEWA, added, “With a strength of 150 megavolt-amperes, this digital station proves DEWA’s strong push for better work, new ideas, and eco care.”
The substation is built in a special way — all its rooms and gear are inside one big building. This saves space and helps protect data. It also has tight security systems like remote control and safe key setups. It has won big awards such as the Green Apple Environment Award 2023 and the Green World Award 2023, showing that DEWA is one of the top groups in using smart and green ideas in the world
