After several days of missile attacks, drone activities, and heavy fighting along the Line of Control (LoC), India and Pakistan decided to stop all military actions on land, air, and sea, starting from the evening of May 10. However, soon after, Pakistan sent drones that were spotted and stopped in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar and Gujarat.
India said that Pakistan had broken the ceasefire agreement, and India’s armed forces responded firmly to this. Vikram Misri, India's Foreign Secretary, made it clear that India takes these violations very seriously.
Here’s what happened in the days leading up to this:
On May 10, early in the morning, the Indian Air Force launched BrahMos cruise missiles targeting important Pakistani Air Force bases. The first missiles hit bases in Chaklala, near Rawalpindi, and Sargodha, in the Punjab region. These bases are crucial to Pakistan’s air force. Later in the day, it was confirmed that other bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including Jacobabad, Bholari, and Skardu, were also struck.

Soon after these missile attacks, India’s intelligence services noticed that Pakistan’s military was on high alert, especially around sensitive areas like its nuclear control centers. This caused some concern, and Pakistan's defense teams increased security in areas like Rawalpindi.
At this point, Pakistan asked the United States for help. The U.S. had been keeping track of the situation and had already warned both sides about the risk of things getting worse. The U.S. urged Pakistan to use its official military hotline to talk with India and calm things down as quickly as possible.
By the afternoon of May 10, after India had successfully stopped many of Pakistan’s aggressive moves, Pakistan’s Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO), Major General Kashif Abdullah, called India’s Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai. The call took place at 3:35 PM Indian time and was later confirmed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in a briefing.
India, however, stood firm in its decision to follow the usual protocols and refused to have informal talks or negotiations with Pakistan. Despite some international pressure, India made it clear that it was ready for further actions if needed. Reports suggested that if things had escalated further, India could have launched coordinated attacks on Pakistan’s energy and economic sectors, as well as its key government operations.
India also confirmed that the decisions made after the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, such as temporarily halting the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), would still stand, even with the ceasefire in place.
