Caracas, November 1, 2025 — Venezuela’s already fragile opposition is facing fresh turmoil as growing U.S. military activity in the Caribbean and Pacific sparks sharp divisions among its key leaders.
The rift has deepened between Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado and two-time presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, both once seen as united in their fight against President Nicolas Maduro’s government. But with Washington intensifying its regional presence and launching targeted boat strikes against what it claims are drug traffickers, their visions for Venezuela’s future have sharply diverged.
Since early September, U.S. forces have conducted more than a dozen strikes in nearby waters, killing dozens, while President Donald Trump has signaled that the operations are part of a broader effort to pressure Maduro. Though Trump denied plans for direct strikes inside Venezuela, he hinted at “further actions” to come.
Maduro, who began his controversial third term this year despite widespread allegations of election fraud, has accused Washington of pursuing regime change. The Venezuelan leader insists his country’s military and people will resist any invasion, calling U.S. moves an “imperialist threat.”
Within Venezuela, the opposition’s once-solid alliance — the Unitary Platform — is fracturing. Machado’s camp has aligned itself closely with Washington, framing Maduro as a regional danger and backing the U.S. buildup. Capriles, meanwhile, has rejected the idea of military intervention, urging for renewed talks despite previous failed negotiations.
“Negotiation will always be better for Venezuela’s future,” Capriles said recently, emphasizing that dialogue, not force, remains the only path forward. His participation in this year’s parliamentary elections — boycotted by Machado’s supporters — has earned him criticism from hardliners who accuse him of legitimizing Maduro’s power.
Machado, now in hiding after being barred from running in the 2024 election, maintains strong popular backing. A Panterra poll in August found 70% of Venezuelans opposed to Maduro’s ruling party, with most respondents favoring U.S. support for Machado’s leadership.
Amid arrests, exiles, and threats of citizenship revocation for opposition figures, ordinary Venezuelans find themselves caught in uncertainty — between a government that won’t yield and an opposition torn over how far to go for change.
