Former US President Donald Trump has proposed a $152 million budget allocation to reopen the historic Alcatraz Island prison, sparking widespread debate over cost, practicality, and cultural impact.
The proposal, included in the fiscal year 2027 budget, aims to transform the former maximum-security facility into a “state-of-the-art secure prison.” The funding would cover the initial phase of reconstruction under the Bureau of Prisons as part of a broader $1.7 billion investment.
Located near the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz—also known as “The Rock”—once housed some of America’s most dangerous criminals before shutting down in 1963 due to high operational costs. Today, it is managed by the National Park Service and attracts millions of tourists annually, generating around $60 million in revenue.
Political Opposition Grows
The plan has drawn sharp criticism from several political leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who dismissed the proposal as “absurd” and a misuse of taxpayer money. She also warned that converting the site back into a prison could erase a key historical landmark and hurt tourism.
Lawmakers and experts have also raised concerns about logistical challenges. The island lacks basic infrastructure such as running water and sewage systems, meaning all supplies would need to be transported by boat—significantly increasing operational costs.
Historical and Financial Concerns
Historically, Alcatraz was one of the most expensive federal prisons to operate, costing nearly three times more than other facilities before its closure. Critics argue that reviving such a model may not be economically viable in today’s context.
Originally built as a military fort, Alcatraz later served as a military and federal prison in the 1930s. It housed infamous criminals such as Al Capone, Mickey Cohen, and George Machine Gun Kelly.
Next Steps
The proposal must still gain approval from the US Congress, where it is expected to face intense scrutiny. While supporters argue it could strengthen high-security incarceration, opponents believe the costs and challenges far outweigh the benefits.
