The Picante cocktail has quickly become one of the most popular drinks in India’s nightlife scene. Walk into any busy bar on a weekend, and you will almost always find servers carrying glasses with chilli salt rims and a bright orange-green drink inside. Even before you spot the menu, you know what it is — the Picante. Usually priced at ₹800 and above, this drink has turned into a must-have order for many young Indians.

The Picante is a tequila-based cocktail with a bold mix of spicy, tangy, and fresh flavours. It is made with tequila, lime juice, agave syrup, fresh chilli, and coriander. Many people describe it as a “fiery chaat in a glass” because the flavours feel familiar and exciting to the Indian tongue. Even though India has embraced it as if it were born here, the drink was actually created in 2012 at SoHo House in Los Angeles. From there, it travelled across the world and has now found a special place in Indian bars.

Experts say the drink works so well because it uses ingredients that Indian people already love. Yangdup Lama, co-owner of Sidecar — one of Asia’s top bars — says the secret is balance. If the chilli is too strong, the drink becomes harsh. If the coriander is too much, it starts tasting like herbs. But when everything is in harmony, the Picante becomes refreshing, spicy, and comforting at the same time. He compares it to the Bloody Mary, another savoury drink that never became popular in India because it felt heavy and difficult to enjoy for long.

Bartenders also say the Indian palate is changing. People are moving away from overly sweet or fruity drinks and choosing fresher, cleaner, and more spice-forward flavours. According to some bar owners, one out of every five tequila-based drinks ordered today is a Picante.

The Picante is not just popular — it is also winning awards. The Leela’s signature version of the drink won “Iconic Cocktail of the Year” at the 2025 Icons of Whisky Awards. It was even served at a dinner during Milan Fashion Week, where Indian chillies replaced jalapeños, showing the drink’s growing global presence.

Many in the industry now believe the Picante is on its way to becoming a modern classic. Naveen Rathee from The Westin Gurgaon says that it shares the same simple and emotional appeal as the Margarita. He notes that guests now order the Picante as easily and confidently as famous drinks like the Old Fashioned or Negroni. That, he says, shows just how long this trend might stay.

The Picante’s rise reflects India’s evolving taste — bold, confident, and open to new experiences. With its mix of heat, freshness, and balance, this cocktail has clearly captured the nation’s attention, one spicy sip at a time.
