OpenAI has taken a major step in its AI expansion by signing a $38 billion agreement with Amazon, enabling the AI pioneer to run its systems on Amazon Web Services (AWS) across U.S. data centers. This partnership signals a major shift in the AI infrastructure landscape and comes just days after OpenAI revised its long-standing cloud partnership with Microsoft.
Through the deal, OpenAI gains access to “hundreds of thousands” of specialized Nvidia AI chips hosted by AWS. The move ensures the company can scale its AI tools, including ChatGPT, to meet the surging demand from millions of global users. Amazon shares surged 4% following the announcement, highlighting investor optimism around the collaboration.
The timing of the deal aligns with OpenAI’s broader restructuring. Regulators in California and Delaware recently approved a new business model for OpenAI, allowing it to raise capital and pursue profit more efficiently. The company, founded as a nonprofit, has been making significant investments in AI infrastructure—reportedly over $1 trillion—through projects with Oracle, SoftBank, and chipmakers including Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom.
AI systems require massive computational resources, and OpenAI has openly acknowledged the urgent need for expanded capacity. According to Amazon, OpenAI will immediately start utilizing AWS computing power, with the bulk of capacity expected to be deployed by the end of 2026, and the potential to scale further into 2027.
This development also positions Amazon as a key player in the AI startup ecosystem, already hosting Anthropic, a competitor in the chatbot space. The deal highlights the growing intensity of cloud competition as AI adoption accelerates globally, emphasizing the critical role of advanced infrastructure in the AI arms race.
