In a significant move to address ongoing fuel supply disruptions, the Nepalese government has implemented a two-day weekend for its public sector and educational institutions. This decision emerged from a recent Cabinet meeting, designating Saturdays and Sundays as official public holidays.
This action is a direct response to the global petroleum supply instability tied to conflicts in West Asia, affecting fuel availability not just in Nepal but across many Asian nations. Officials stress that the goal is to decrease fuel consumption and effectively navigate the current crisis.
Sasmit Pokharel, the government spokesperson, announced updated working hours for government offices, which will now run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a change from the previous 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. timing, ensuring productivity within the new working structure.
Furthermore, the government is looking towards long-term remedies by advocating for a shift to electric vehicles. Preparations are underway to establish legal policies aimed at converting conventional petrol and diesel vehicles to electric, as Nepal seeks to lessen its reliance on fossil fuels in the coming years.
