Lieutenant Commander Jonny Kim, a Los Angeles native with an extraordinary resume, is preparing for his next great adventure as a NASA astronaut. At just 40 years old, Kim's achievements include a decorated career as a Navy SEAL, a Harvard-trained physician, and now, an astronaut set to embark on a mission to space.
Kim joined NASA in 2017 and is slated for a historic journey aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft in March 2025. This mission will see him spending nearly eight months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), alongside two Russian cosmonauts. His tasks will involve conducting vital scientific research and preparing the ISS for future missions.
Kim's path to becoming an astronaut is as remarkable as his previous accomplishments. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of San Diego before going on to graduate from Harvard Medical School. His medical training included a stint as an emergency room intern at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Before venturing into the medical field, Kim dedicated a decade to service as a Navy SEAL, where he gained extensive experience in high-stakes operations. He is also a dual-designated naval aviator and flight surgeon, adding further depth to his diverse skill set.
During his time at NASA, Kim has held several key roles, including serving as the lead operations officer for Expedition 65 and the T-38 operations liaison. His new role as an astronaut will challenge him to adapt to the unique demands of living and working in space.
Kim's mission arrives at a challenging time for NASA. Currently, astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are stranded on the ISS due to issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Helium leaks, which have proven to be more severe than initially thought, have delayed their return to Earth. NASA is now awaiting the arrival of a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, scheduled to bring them home in February of the coming year.
Kim's upcoming mission represents a significant milestone in his storied career and underscores NASA's ongoing commitment to exploring and advancing human presence in space despite the challenges faced.
