NASA has unveiled a breathtaking image of the Moon, captured by the Artemis II crew during their monumental mission. This captivating photo highlights the Orientale Basin located on the lunar surface, showcasing a rarely seen feature in remarkable detail.
The Artemis II crew consists of four astronauts — Jeremy Hansen, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Christina Koch — who are aboard the Orion spacecraft. This mission signifies the first human expedition towards the Moon since Apollo 17.
The primary objective of the mission is to photograph the Moon’s far side and assess capabilities for deep-space travel. Artemis II is projected to cover over 400,000 kilometers from Earth, setting new benchmarks for human spaceflight before looping around the Moon and returning without making a landing.
Scheduled to conclude in nearly 10 days with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, NASA envisions this mission as a foundational step towards future lunar landings, aiming to position astronauts near the Moon’s south pole by 2028.
