Canadian actor Michael J. Fox has shared insights on living with Parkinson’s disease and his ongoing commitment to the Parkinson’s community as his charitable foundation marks 25 years. Fox, 64, discussed his experiences during a recent interview, reflecting on both his personal journey and the broader impact of his advocacy.
Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29, Fox initially kept his condition private, taking seven years to process the diagnosis before going public. Parkinson’s is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system that primarily affects motor functions, causing symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, slow movement, and muscle rigidity. While the disease cannot be cured, treatments aim to manage symptoms. Complications related to Parkinson’s, such as falls, aspiration, and pneumonia, can be life-threatening.
Fox founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, focusing on research for a cure and improving therapies for those living with the condition. Since its inception, the foundation has raised more than $2.5 billion. Fox emphasized that his work is not about personal recognition but about supporting families and individuals affected by Parkinson’s and driving meaningful change in research and care.
During the interview, Fox also reflected on his early acting career, highlighting the demanding schedules while filming Family Ties and Back to the Future. He described surviving on three to four hours of sleep per night for several months, juggling multiple sets, and maintaining his energy despite the intense workload at the age of 23.
Speaking candidly about the challenges of living with Parkinson’s, Fox acknowledged the toll the disease has taken on his body over the years, including injuries and the discovery of a benign spinal tumor. He described Parkinson’s as a “gift that keeps on taking,” noting the daily difficulties it presents while emphasizing the importance of gratitude and optimism as coping mechanisms.
Fox retired from acting in 2020 but recently announced he will guest star in an episode of the television series Shrinking in 2026. In recognition of his humanitarian efforts, he was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in November 2023, an honorary Oscar given to individuals whose charitable work has brought distinction to the film industry.
Through decades of advocacy, Fox has become a leading public face for Parkinson’s awareness, using his platform to reduce stigma and inspire hope for the millions affected worldwide. His foundation’s continued success underscores both the scale of the disease’s impact and the potential for research to improve the quality of life for patients and families.
