At the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Manoj Bajpayee spoke honestly about the problems facing both independent films and Bollywood. He said that right now, the film industry is in a tough place and not connecting with the audience like it should.
"We are at our lowest right now," said Bajpayee. He explained that OTT platforms, which many thought would help indie films, are not doing that anymore. "Even these platforms, which were supposed to support creative films, have stopped doing so," he said. "Independent cinema, which focuses on art, is struggling. This is a loss for both actors and the growth of Indian cinema."
Manoj Bajpayee is famous for his roles in films like Gangs of Wasseypur and Satya, and the popular show The Family Man. He has worked in both independent films and big commercial movies, which has made him a respected actor. Despite the challenges in the film industry, his love for acting is still strong. For Bajpayee, acting is not just a job, it's a passion.

"Acting is the toughest job in the world," he said. He talked about how it takes a lot of emotional effort to play his characters. "But if you give me a role that makes me wake up at 4 a.m., I’m ready for it," he added. This shows how dedicated he is to his work.
When asked how he balances his personal life and work, Bajpayee was honest. "I can’t say I’m as focused on being a father or husband as I am on my acting," he said. "I’m lucky my family understands that I need to focus on my work."
Bajpayee also shared how deeply he gets into his roles. "The marks of those characters must stay with me. I throw myself into my work, and it leaves marks. I can’t say it hasn’t hurt me, but I don’t want to think about it." This shows how much he sacrifices to bring his characters to life.
Even though Bajpayee is one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, he doesn’t care much about fame. “I love going to the market and buying my vegetables,” he said. "That gives me more happiness than people asking for selfies." For him, stardom is about mystery and glamour, but he doesn’t chase it. What matters to him is finding roles where he can truly become someone else. "What I look for is a role where I can say, ‘That’s not me; that’s someone else.’"
This humble attitude has helped him work with many new filmmakers. Looking back on his career, Bajpayee said that when he did Gangs of Wasseypur, he realized the industry wouldn’t give him the roles he wanted. “So, I started looking for my directors and scripts,” he said. “That’s how films like Gali Guleiyan and Joram happened. I’m thankful to those directors for challenging me and helping me grow as an actor.”
Bajpayee believes that to be a good actor, you need to connect with regular people. "If I’m not interacting with people and observing them, how can I play them on screen?" he asked. He likes to travel in the metro or local trains to see how people live, even in tough situations. "These are the stories I want to tell," he said.
Manoj Bajpayee’s words show us that being a great actor isn’t about fame. It’s about being passionate about your work, understanding people, and always telling real stories. His hard work and love for acting continue to influence Indian cinema.
