West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in Baramati. She raised questions over the incident and hinted at a possible political angle.
Speaking at a public event, Mamata Banerjee said she was deeply shocked by the tragic news. She stated that even political leaders are not safe in the country and questioned the circumstances of the crash. She also referred to recent political developments, claiming that Ajit Pawar was expected to return to his party’s original political path.
Banerjee said that only the Supreme Court can be trusted to supervise the investigation, alleging that central agencies are compromised. She expressed condolences to Ajit Pawar’s family, his uncle Sharad Pawar, and the people of Maharashtra.
Ajit Pawar was among five people killed when a chartered aircraft crash-landed at Baramati airport in Pune district. The plane was operated by Delhi-based VSR Ventures, and all five passengers, including crew members, died in the accident, according to the aviation regulator DGCA.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also demanded a probe into the crash but did not link it to politics. He expressed deep grief over Ajit Pawar’s death and offered condolences to the Pawar family, supporters, and well-wishers.
Kharge said Ajit Pawar was a seasoned politician who served Maharashtra in several constitutional roles and would be remembered for his dedication and leadership.
