The manufacturing landscape in Malaysia is increasingly strained as companies grapple with supply shortages and escalating costs. According to a recent survey by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing, almost 90% of manufacturers anticipate operational hurdles in the weeks ahead.
The survey reveals alarming shortages of essential raw materials, including naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), sulphur, and specialty chemicals. Industries such as plastics, electronics, and food processing are notably affected, with shipment delays of critical metals like aluminium and copper exacerbating the situation.
Additionally, surging energy and logistics expenses are intensifying the crisis. Nearly half of the firms surveyed reported increases in energy costs ranging from 10% to 30%, with some facing even higher hikes. Over half of the manufacturers noted a significant rise in logistics costs due to global supply chain issues and elevated freight rates.
Consequently, several manufacturers have either scaled back production or ceased operations temporarily. Moreover, export activities are being hampered by delays and cancellations. In response, companies are exploring alternative suppliers in countries like China, India, and Japan, despite facing regulatory challenges and rising expenses. This scenario reveals the growing uncertainty within Malaysia's manufacturing sector against the backdrop of ongoing global economic tensions.
