Nottingham Forest is a surprise team in second place, but Arsenal and Chelsea can still close the gap when they play later this week. Even with the lead, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said they can’t celebrate just yet, as they are still one game away from the halfway point of the season.
Arne Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp, has done well since joining. He has won 23 of the last 27 matches in all competitions. After the big win against West Ham, Slot said, “I enjoyed it a lot because it doesn't happen many times that I could just sit back and enjoy.”
The game began with Diaz, who had been rested in the last match, opening the scoring at the 30-minute mark. He took a lucky rebound from a West Ham defender and scored low into the corner. West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus nearly scored an equalizer, but his shot hit the post, and that was the closest West Ham came to scoring.
Before halftime, Liverpool scored two more goals in quick succession. Salah set up Gakpo for his ninth goal of the season. Then, Salah scored his own goal with a nice curl into the near post. Salah’s goal was his 20th of the season, marking his eighth straight season with 20 or more goals since joining Liverpool in 2017.
Even though there have been rumors about players like Alexander-Arnold, Salah, and Virgil van Dijk possibly moving to foreign clubs next season, they are all focused on winning the Premier League title. Salah said, “The only thing in my mind is that I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of it. That is the only thing I have focused on. I will do my best to win the trophy.”
Alexander-Arnold also showed why he is so important to Liverpool by scoring a powerful shot that deflected off Max Kilman for the fourth goal. Jota, who came off the bench, finished the game with the fifth goal after a brilliant assist from Salah. Salah dribbled past three West Ham players and passed the ball to Jota for an easy finish. This was Salah's 13th assist of the season, adding to his 17 goals in 18 games.
