Mohamed Salah continued his excellent form to help Liverpool maintain their perfect record in the Champions League, securing a vital win on Tuesday. Meanwhile, holders Real Madrid bounced back from their recent loss to Liverpool, defeating the in-form Atalanta 3-2 to stay in contention.
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain, struggling earlier in the competition, secured a crucial 3-0 victory over Salzburg. Bayer Leverkusen triumphed over Inter Milan 1-0 to move into second place, while Aston Villa, playing in Europe’s premier club competition for the first time in 41 years, held on to a strong position with a 3-2 win over Leipzig, sitting comfortably in third.
The Champions League format allows the top eight teams from the group stage to qualify directly for the knockout round, with teams ranked ninth to 24th entering a play-off for a place in the round of 16.

In Spain, Liverpool’s Salah was once again the hero, scoring a 63rd-minute penalty that proved decisive in a 1-0 victory over Girona. This win extended Liverpool’s flawless record in the competition to six out of six. The match was far from easy for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and new coach Arne Slot admitted that although the result was important, the performance was not up to par. "We had hardly any control over the game," Slot said. "Maybe the second half was a bit better, but I'm trying to stay positive." Despite this, Salah’s crucial penalty saw him reach 50 Champions League goals, tying with Filippo Inzaghi as the 10th-highest scorer of all time in the competition.
Salah’s form has been key to Liverpool’s impressive start to the season, with the Egyptian forward netting 16 goals across all competitions. Though the team has already booked their place in the knockout round, the upcoming two rounds of the league phase will determine their final position in the group.
For Real Madrid, after their defeat to Liverpool, the stakes were high. In the first half, Kylian Mbappe gave Madrid a 1-0 lead, but Atalanta equalized with a penalty from Charles de Ketelaere. However, Real Madrid regained the lead in the second half. Vinicius Junior scored his first goal since recovering from a hamstring injury, putting Madrid 2-1 up. Jude Bellingham sealed the win with a third goal, giving Real a 3-2 victory. This win helped calm any nerves at the Spanish giants, and Real’s qualification for the knockout rounds looks more secure after this vital victory.
In Paris, PSG desperately needed a win after their underwhelming start to the group stage. The French champions, sitting 25th with just four points and three goals after five matches, travelled to Salzburg and came away with a dominant 3-0 win. This victory was essential to their chances of advancing, and PSG’s next two matches will be crucial to their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
Bayern Munich were in fine form, dispatching Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1. The win kept the German giants on track to secure a top spot in the group. Bayer Leverkusen also secured a vital win, becoming the first team to score against Inter Milan in this year's competition. Their 1-0 win over the Serie A side moved them just five points behind Liverpool at the top of the group.
Another surprise came from Brest, a small French Ligue 1 team that earned a 1-0 victory over former European champions PSV Eindhoven. Brest’s triumph put them in a strong position, sitting fifth in the group, an impressive feat for their first-ever appearance in European competition.
In other notable results, Celtic and Dinamo Zagreb played out a goalless draw, keeping both teams in the hunt for a place in the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, Club Brugge claimed a 2-1 victory over Sporting, further boosting their chances of advancing.
This round of Champions League action highlighted the intense competition and the high stakes for many clubs as they fight for a place in the knockout phase. As the group stages draw to a close, teams will be looking to secure their places in the final 16, with many clubs facing crucial matches in the coming weeks.
