As Diwali celebrations lit up the skies across India, the after-effects of fireworks crossed borders, severely impacting Pakistan’s Punjab province. Lahore’s air quality has plunged to alarming levels, trailing only Delhi as the most polluted city in the world. According to the Punjab Environment Protection Department (EPD), cross-border pollutants from Indian cities, coupled with local emissions and low wind speeds, have triggered a sharp rise in air pollution. The Diwali-induced pollution surge in Lahore highlights the environmental challenges facing South Asian cities during major festivals.
By Tuesday morning, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 266, classifying the city’s air as extremely hazardous. The rise in toxic particulate matter prompted the Punjab government to activate emergency measures, including anti-smog guns and water sprinkling operations on key roads. Lahore’s worsening air quality forced authorities to form smog response squads, covering construction sites, restricting traffic, and cracking down on industrial emissions. Residents were urged to wear masks and limit outdoor activities as PM2.5 concentrations reached 187 µg/m³, nearly 37 times above World Health Organization safety limits.
Officials in Lahore have attributed the sharp decline in air quality to a combination of local and cross-border factors. Winds traveling at 4 to 7 km/h carried pollutants from northern Indian cities such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Haryana, worsening the haze over Lahore. Other cities in Punjab, including Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, and Multan, were also affected. Maryam Nawaz-led provincial authorities emphasized that cross-border pollution is a shared environmental concern, urging citizens to reduce local emissions while authorities monitored incoming pollutants. Lahore’s pollution crisis has become a stark reminder of how festivities in one country can have far-reaching effects on neighboring regions.
The Diwali celebrations in India, especially in Delhi, Kolkata, and other northern cities, saw widespread use of fireworks despite court-mandated restrictions on “green crackers.” Delhi’s PM2.5 levels exceeded 248 µg/m³ in many areas, while Kolkata reached 203 µg/m³. The resulting toxic air drifted into Pakistan, compounding an already severe smog crisis. Lahore authorities responded by arresting 83 individuals responsible for illegal emissions from factories and burning waste, as part of the city’s anti-smog drive. Citizens were advised to avoid outdoor activities and use air purifiers where possible.
Experts warn that cross-border pollution during major festivals is becoming an annual environmental challenge for South Asia. Lahore’s toxic air has sparked international concern and emphasizes the urgent need for regional cooperation on air quality management. As the Diwali lights fade, a thick haze lingers across both India and Pakistan, leaving residents grappling with the health risks of festival-related air pollution. Lahore’s air quality crisis underscores the broader issue of sustainable festival practices and the shared responsibility of neighboring nations to mitigate environmental impacts.
