Los Angeles: Musician Cleto Escobedo III, best known as the bandleader on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the late-night host’s childhood friend, has died at the age of 59. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Jimmy Kimmel, who shared an emotional tribute on social media remembering Escobedo as a “great friend, father, and musician.”
Kimmel took to Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, posting a picture of Cleto along with a touching note. “Early this morning, we lost a great friend, father, son, musician, and man — my longtime bandleader Cleto Escobedo III. To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement,” Kimmel wrote.
He further expressed how deep their friendship ran: “Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was nine years old. The fact that we got to work together every day is a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true. Cherish your friends and please keep Cleto’s wife, children, and parents in your prayers.”
While the cause of death has not been revealed, Kimmel’s heartfelt post has drawn messages of support and condolences from celebrities and fans across the entertainment industry.
Singer and dancer Paula Abdul also shared a tribute to Escobedo, recalling their early years performing together. “My heart is heavy today as we say goodbye to the incredible Cleto Escobedo III. I first met Cleto when he was playing sax in a small bar at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. His talent and energy were undeniable,” she wrote, adding that hiring him for her first world tour was one of her best decisions.
Escobedo, a Las Vegas native, had known Kimmel since childhood. Their friendship evolved into a professional collaboration when Kimmel launched Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2003, where Cleto became the leader of Cleto and the Cletones, the show’s house band.
Known for his warm presence and musical versatility, Escobedo played alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones and often performed with a contagious energy that became part of the show’s charm.
His passing also follows reports of a “personal matter” that led to the postponement of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! episode on November 6.
As tributes pour in, fans remember Cleto Escobedo III not only as a gifted musician but also as a loyal friend and creative soul who brought joy to millions through music and television
