The captain of the Indian men's football team, Sandesh Jhingan, has voiced significant concerns over the extravagant funds allocated to Lionel Messi’s prominent ‘GOAT Tour’ in India. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Jhingan challenged the rationale behind spending crores on a brief three-day exhibition when Indian football is in dire straits. He pondered whether there is genuine interest in investing in the future of football within the nation.
The Messi tour generated enormous buzz across India, with large audiences converging in cities like Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Fans were willing to pay sky-high ticket prices for a glimpse of the football icon, accompanied by stars like Rodrigo de Paul and Luis Suarez. While the excitement demonstrated a strong passion for football, Jhingan remarked that it also highlighted the nation's misplaced priorities, particularly with domestic football on hold.
He explained that Indian football is undergoing one of its most challenging periods. There is a genuine threat of the whole system shutting down due to the absence of active domestic competitions. Both the Indian Super League and I-League are currently inactive, with no broadcast partner established. This lack of organization and backing is driving the sport closer to a standstill.
The defender noted a harsh reality for Indian players. Although people display a deep affection for football and are eager to spend large sums on international stars, local players and leagues do not receive comparable support. According to him, while the nation loves the game, it does not extend that same loyalty to its homegrown talent.
The Kolkata segment of the tour also attracted controversy when chaos ensued at Salt Lake Stadium. Numerous fans complained that, despite premium ticket prices, they failed to see Messi properly, as he spent only a brief time on the field, encircled by a crowd including political figures. This led to escalating confusion and ultimately the arrest of event organizer Shatadru Datta.
Reflecting on the entire situation, Jhingan expressed happiness at seeing packed stadiums and significant public enthusiasm for football. However, he was troubled by the stark contrast between that enthusiasm and the dismal state of Indian football. While he acknowledged critiques of the national team's performances, he emphasized that those results are inextricably linked to the underlying system.
Jhingan articulated that football relies heavily on structure, sustainability, and long-term investment. Without sufficient planning and funding, players cannot be expected to perform at their best. Despite his frustrations, he concluded on an optimistic note, stating that Indian football has a brighter past and can potentially thrive again with the right measures in place.
