A Class 4 student, Amaira Kumar Meena, tragically died by suicide on November 1 at Neerja Modi School in Jaipur. A probe by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has revealed the heartbreaking events that led to her death, highlighting long-term bullying, harassment, and a lack of support from school authorities.
The CBSE report found that Amaira had been bullied by classmates for 18 months. She had approached her class teacher, Puneeta Sharma, five times on the day of the incident, spending 45 minutes seeking help for harassment, but the teacher allegedly ignored her pleas. Instead of intervening, the teacher reportedly shouted at Amaira and said words that shocked the entire class. Feeling cornered and helpless, Amaira left her classroom on the ground floor and jumped from the fourth floor, dying instantly.
CCTV footage showed that Amaira appeared happy and cheerful earlier in the morning, enjoying conversations, chocolate, and snacks. Trouble began after 11 am when she noticed something inappropriate written on a digital slate by a group of boys. Despite asking classmates to stop and erase the content, she did not receive any immediate support from teachers.
The report also noted multiple past incidents of bullying. In September, Amaira’s father had raised a complaint about a classmate harassing her, but the teacher reportedly told him the student “needs to adjust with other kids.” In October, a boy misquoted Amaira’s greeting as “I love you” in public. Though the boy’s mother made him apologize after Amaira’s mother intervened, the school authorities took no action. Other incidents included physical harassment and verbal abuse with derogatory and sexual connotations. Parents’ attempts to transfer Amaira to another school were unsuccessful, leaving the child feeling isolated and distressed.
The CBSE report criticized the school for not taking preventive action or providing a safe environment. The teacher and school management were reportedly aware of the bullying and trauma but failed to respond appropriately. Safety lapses on campus were also highlighted. Amaira was able to access the fourth floor from her ground-floor classroom, there were no staff monitoring CCTV footage, floor attendants were absent, students did not wear ID cards, and there were no protective nets on higher floors.
The report attributed Amaira’s untimely death to the lack of support, empathy, and timely intervention by teachers and school authorities. It called the trauma she faced “unbearable” and emphasized that stricter monitoring and preventive measures could have prevented this tragedy.
Amaira was described by teachers, classmates, and parents as a bright, cheerful, and friendly student who excelled academically and in extracurricular activities. The CBSE has asked the school to submit a detailed explanation within 30 days on why penalties should not be imposed, including possible violations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
This tragic incident has raised urgent questions about bullying, school safety, and the responsibility of educational institutions to protect children from harassment and mental distress.
