A powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit central Bangladesh on Friday morning, causing panic in Dhaka and nearby regions and claiming the lives of six people. The earthquake struck at 10:38 AM local time, with its epicentre located about 14 kilometres from Narsingdi, near the capital city Dhaka.
Residents in Dhaka and surrounding areas reported mild to moderate tremors, with fans, lights, and wall hangings visibly shaking. Many people rushed out of their homes, offices, and schools for safety. Several shared videos on social media showing the tremors and the immediate reaction of the public.
The quake was shallow, which increased the intensity of shaking on the surface. Experts explained that Bangladesh lies in a seismically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. This makes the area prone to earthquakes, sometimes affecting neighbouring India, Myanmar, and Nepal.
Tragically, the earthquake led to the deaths of six people, mostly due to falling debris and structural damages in Narsingdi and nearby areas. Several others were reported injured, and emergency medical teams have been dispatched to provide immediate assistance.
Although the tremors were strong enough to alarm residents, authorities confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing. Teams in Dhaka, Narsingdi, and neighbouring districts are inspecting buildings, bridges, and public facilities to ensure safety. Residents were advised to remain calm, follow safety instructions, and avoid spreading unverified information about the earthquake.
The earthquake also affected other parts of eastern India, including West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, where people reported feeling light tremors. Social media users in Kolkata, Cooch Behar, and Dinajpur shared their experiences of swaying walls and fans, highlighting how far the impact of the quake reached.
Authorities emphasized the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone regions. Citizens were urged to stay away from tall buildings and avoid using elevators immediately after tremors. Officials also warned of possible aftershocks and reminded residents to stay alert for official updates.
The incident has renewed discussions on the need for better earthquake preparedness and building safety standards in Bangladesh and neighbouring regions. While the quake caused fatalities this time, experts stressed that proactive measures can prevent more deaths in future events.
