Spain reached the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time in six years after a strong comeback against the Czech Republic. The tie ended 2-1 in favor of Spain, even without their star player, world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew due to a hamstring injury just before the tournament began.
The opening singles match went against Spain when Pablo Carreno Busta lost to Jakub Mensik in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Carreno Busta, ranked 89th in the world, struggled against Mensik’s powerful shots and 20 aces. Despite breaking Mensik’s serve midway through the first set, Carreno Busta could not maintain momentum, and Mensik secured the win with timely breaks in both sets, giving the Czech Republic an early lead.
Spain, however, bounced back in the second singles match. Jaume Munar earned his first Davis Cup victory, defeating Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4. Munar showed calm and precision, breaking his opponent’s serve once in each set to level the tie at 1-1. His performance highlighted Spain’s depth, proving the team could compete effectively even without Alcaraz.
The deciding point came in the doubles match, where veteran Marcel Granollers, aged 39, teamed up with Pedro Martinez. They faced Mensik and Tomas Machac in a tense and competitive match. Both sets went to tie-breaks, but Granollers and Martinez managed to edge out the Czechs 7-6(8), 7-6(8), securing Spain’s place in the semi-finals. The match displayed strategy, teamwork, and resilience, bringing Spain back from a challenging start.
Meanwhile, Germany also earned a thrilling win to reach the last four. After Tomas Etcheverry’s 23-ace performance gave Argentina a singles victory, Germany responded strongly. Alexander Zverev defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 7-6(3), forcing a doubles decider. In the decisive doubles match, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz faced Horacio Zeballos and Andres Molteni. After a long, dramatic contest lasting nearly two and a half hours, the German duo won 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(10), overcoming saved match points to clinch victory and advance to the semi-finals.
In other results, Italy, hosting the Davis Cup, progressed to the semi-finals despite missing world number two Jannik Sinner and world number eight Lorenzo Musetti. They defeated Austria in Bologna and will face Belgium in the next round, aiming for a third consecutive Davis Cup title.
The semi-finals promise intense competition as Spain will meet Germany in a clash of comeback specialists, while Italy prepares to take on Belgium. Both ties highlight the excitement, unpredictability, and high skill level that makes the Davis Cup one of the most prestigious team events in international tennis. Fans can expect fast-paced matches, thrilling rallies, and moments of individual brilliance from the top players in the world.
