In a bold move to bridge the gap between Android and iOS, Google has unveiled a feature that lets its latest Pixel smartphones exchange images and files directly with iPhones using Apple’s AirDrop protocol. This marks a rare instance of Google working within the ecosystem of its biggest rival without any workaround or server-based routing.
AirDrop has long been an Apple-exclusive feature, enabling iPhone, iPad, and Mac users to quickly transfer files over a secure, peer-to-peer connection. Google’s Pixel 10 series now supports a similar experience, letting users share photos and documents with iPhones and Macs as seamlessly as with other Android devices.
The setup requires iPhone users to temporarily adjust their AirDrop settings to “everyone for 10 minutes,” after which it resets to contacts only, maintaining privacy. Google emphasizes that the connection is fully peer-to-peer, with no content logged or extra data shared, ensuring user security. Early tests show smooth transfers between a Pixel 10 Pro and an iPhone 17 Pro Max, including sending files to nearby Macs.
Google frames this update as a consumer-friendly solution, similar to the adoption of RCS messaging, which has made cross-platform texting and media sharing easier. The move could challenge Apple’s long-standing ecosystem exclusivity, giving users more freedom to share content regardless of the device they own.
For now, the feature is gradually rolling out and requires a Pixel 10 device. While past attempts by other companies to replicate Apple’s signature features have faced pushback, Google’s implementation has been carefully vetted for privacy and security, aiming to make cross-platform sharing effortless and safe.
