A self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo sold for a record $54.66 million in New York, becoming the most expensive painting by a woman ever sold at auction. The sale took place on Thursday at Sotheby’s, where the artwork, titled El Sueño (La Cama) or The Dream (The Bed), was expected to fetch between $40 million and $60 million. The buyer’s identity has not been revealed.
The painting, created in 1940, shows Kahlo lying in a bed that seems to float among clouds, beneath a skeleton with legs wrapped in sticks of dynamite. It combines Mexican folkloric motifs with European surrealist influences. Experts say it reflects a deeply personal moment in Kahlo’s life during a turbulent period marked by her relationship with artist Diego Rivera.
Sotheby’s described the work as "the most valuable painting by a woman artist ever sold at auction." It surpasses the previous record held by American painter Georgia O’Keeffe, whose 1932 work Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for $44.4 million in 2014.
The auction also followed another record-setting sale at Sotheby’s in New York, where Austrian painter Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer fetched $236.4 million, the second-highest price for any artwork ever sold at auction. The most expensive painting remains Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, which sold for $450 million in 2017.
Frida Kahlo, who passed away in 1954 at age 47, is celebrated worldwide for her vivid self-portraits and unique artistic style. The Dream (The Bed) adds another milestone to her legacy and highlights the growing recognition and value of artworks by women artists in the global art market.
