In a collaborative press briefing in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, acknowledged Israel's recognition of recent Iranian military drills. However, Netanyahu refrained from delving into further details regarding these maneuvers.
Reports from Iranian state media indicate that missile exercises have taken place in multiple cities, marking a trend of escalating military activity and reinforcing Iran's commitment to enhancing its ballistic missile arsenal.
Iran's ballistic missile program has long been considered a major obstacle to Middle Eastern stability by Western nations. These missiles are viewed not only as standard military assets but also potentially as platforms for nuclear warheads, should Iran choose to pursue nuclear ambitions. Iran maintains that it has no plans to develop nuclear weapons and asserts its right to peaceful nuclear energy.
For the last decade, Israel, Greece, and Cyprus have been actively bolstering their relationships, motivated by shared concerns about Turkey's influence in the eastern Mediterranean. Their collaboration has fostered improved security and economic partnerships among the trio.
Netanyahu emphasized that even with Israel's significant achievements during the recent 12-day conflict with Iran in June, the fundamental expectations Israel and the U.S. have regarding Iran remain unchanged. A crucial demand is for Iran to lower its uranium enrichment, which is key to the development of nuclear weaponry.
As for his upcoming discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, Netanyahu noted that their talks would center on these crucial expectations, clarifying that Israel seeks to promote "stability, prosperity, and peace" in the region rather than engage in conflict with Iran.
In addition to addressing Iran, Netanyahu is set to discuss advancing the next phase of Trump's Gaza initiative and tackling the threats from Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant organization.
The trio of leaders reached a consensus to amplify their security measures and revealed plans for a significant infrastructure project aimed at connecting India to Europe via the Middle East through maritime and rail networks, establishing what President Christodoulides referred to as a "southeastern gateway" linking Europe with the broader Middle East.
They also plan to create an undersea power cable that would connect their electricity grids with those of Europe and the Arabian Peninsula, thereby reinforcing energy collaboration.
Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis characterized Greece as a burgeoning energy coordinator in southeastern Europe, particularly for liquefied natural gas, and underscored that interconnection endeavors remain paramount for all three nations.
Following the conference, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen stated to Reuters that the trilateral meeting is pivotal in an era when certain nations are allegedly seeking to disrupt regional stability, although he did not specify which countries were involved.
