Inter Milan preserved their perfect record in this season’s Champions League after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan’s spirited debutants Kairat Almaty at the San Siro on Wednesday. A 67th-minute strike by Carlos Augusto proved decisive as the Italian giants claimed their fourth win from as many league-phase fixtures.
With 12 points, Inter sit level with Bayern Munich and Arsenal at the top of the table, placing them in a commanding position to reach the round of 16. Historically, 16 points have been enough to secure a top-eight finish, indicating that four more points from their remaining four fixtures could seal direct qualification to the knockout phase.
However, tougher challenges lie ahead for the Nerazzurri, including home fixtures against Liverpool and Premier League leaders Arsenal, and an away clash at Atletico Madrid later this month.
“There are no easy games in the Champions League, we didn’t play our best but we managed to win,” said match-winner Carlos Augusto. “We know our quality but must prove it every time we’re on the pitch.”
A Stubborn Kairat Push Inter to the Edge
Despite dominating possession and chances early on, Inter struggled to break down a resolute Kairat defence. Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring just before half-time with his 160th goal for the club, reacting quickest after his initial effort was blocked.
Kairat, though, refused to bow out quietly. Ofri Arad equalised with a powerful header nine minutes into the second half, stunning the home support and briefly threatening an upset. It took a driven low shot from Carlos Augusto to prevent the Kazakh side from snatching their first-ever Champions League point away from home.
Goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov was a standout for the visitors, pulling off several crucial saves, including a double-stop to deny Martinez early on and a fingertip effort to repel Pio Esposito later in the game.
Kairat, who sit just three points off the play-off positions, still have encounters with Copenhagen, Olympiakos and Club Brugge before visiting Arsenal in London. Their brave performance in Milan underlines the growing character of a side fighting to defy the odds in their maiden European campaign.
Inter will need to sharpen their finishing and defensive focus in upcoming matches if they hope to carry their momentum forward. While their current form inspires confidence, the margin for error narrows as the knockout stages near.
