Indonesia is grappling with an escalating waste crisis as its landfill facilities approach breaking points. The recent tragedy of a landslide at the Bantar Gebang landfill, which resulted in casualties and a temporary closure of the site, has intensified the issue. Consequently, garbage has amassed throughout Jakarta, with thousands of tonnes of refuse cluttering public spaces, disrupting daily activities and igniting health alarms.
For many years, Indonesia has depended on landfills like Bantar Gebang, now burdened with over 80 million tonnes of waste—significantly exceeding its capacity. The emergence of vast “trash mountains” underscores the persistent failure of centralized waste management systems. Officials caution that, if not addressed swiftly, landfills across the country could reach full capacity in a few years.
In reaction to this crisis, the government has introduced substantial waste-to-energy projects in various cities. However, these plans have drawn criticism for potential environmental impacts, including air quality issues and the inadequacy of waste sorting. Residents near these facilities have reported unpleasant odors and deteriorating air, prompting doubts about their long-term feasibility.
Amidst these hurdles, numerous grassroots initiatives are proving transformative. Local communities, especially in island and rural regions, are successfully cutting down on waste through effective sorting, recycling, and composting strategies. These approaches illustrate that sustainable waste management is reachable through citizen engagement, awareness, and localized solutions. Experts insist that focusing on waste reduction at its source is key to Indonesia’s environmental preservation.
